“I traded my lab coat to become an independent patient advocate.”
Nancy R. Keller, PhD, BCPA
Board Certified Patient Advocate
I spend an incredible amount of time thinking about how the body works - it's my passion. For as long as I can remember I've had to know the HOW behind body functions. I pursued that end throughout school and my career, and with a PhD in Pathology, I now have the expertise to support my passion. I am well versed in normal physiology and pathophysiology, or how a body normally works and how it becomes diseased.
I'm not an expert in every system, but I am quite adept at research and will not stop until an answer is found. I have extensive knowledge of reproduction and infertility from working 13 years in that field. Next, I know more than the average physician about autonomic dysfunction, including Postural Orthostatic Tachycardia Syndrome (POTS), Pure Autonomic Failure, and Multiple System Atrophy, having run a research lab in that field for 8 years in the Vanderbilt Autonomic Dysfunction Center. Finally, 10 years in the pharmaceutical industry allowed me to discuss the treatment and management of Type II Diabetes with the best physicians and researchers in my region; from primary care physicians all the way to department chairpersons.
All that together has given me the confidence to approach most any disease with curiosity and a desire to find solutions for people's illness. In my current role as a Patient Advocate, I have served many types of clients including those with terminal cancer (pancreatic, colon, lung), Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome, undiagnosed symptoms, and common diseases of aging. Perhaps my favorite clients, however, are seniors. I am honored to serve those who came before us. Our mothers and fathers, aunts and uncles, all who worked a lifetime and accumulated a vast body of knowledge. I am in awe of their experiences and respect their wisdom.
We are all unique, but I’ve been told I’m uniquely unique! Despite years of education, you’ll find that I am a very down to earth person, I tell it like it is, and I put things in simple terms. No hoity-toity attitude here! We’re all people in virtually the same body, we all bleed red, and our insides are pink. Every one of us. Together we are one and I believe that we are at our best when we serve others.

Why do you call your business “Stepwise” Patient Advocacy?
There are many steps one must take to obtain proper healthcare. It can’t be done with the click of one’s heels like Dorothy in The Wizard of Oz. Much like climbing steps to the top of a monument or hiking up a mountain peak to see the glorious view, it requires putting one foot in front of the other - one step at a time. So is the path to attaining the optimal state of health. It takes time and isn’t always easy to find the right route but with patience and perseverance, it’s well worth the effort! My job is to take those steps with you until you can safely and confidently walk the path on your own.
